Molecular Genetic Testing

Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (GINA) makes it illegal for health insurers to request or use one’s genetic information to deny health insurance, or to alter how much one pays for health insurance. It prevents the use of your genetic information to determine if a condition is considered pre-existing. Furthermore, GINA protects individuals from genetic discrimination by employers.

GINA does not apply to life, long-term care, or disability insurance. Because of this, residents of some states may be asked to disclose their genetic information. Different states have extended protection to cover other forms of insurance.

Pharmacogenomics (PGx)

  • Analyzes a patient’s genetic make-up to optimize drug selection and dosing.
  • A one-time test used to provide precision guidance for medications used in managing cardiovascular, mental disorders, pain, cancer treatment, diabetes, gastrointestinal conditions, infectious disease, immune disorders, and urological conditions.

STI Testing & Women’s Health

  • STI testing is available for women and men, as part of routine care or when an STI is suspected. This test detects the DNA of several microorganims and viral infections which cause STIs.
  • The Women’s Health test can be used to detect the DNA of microorganisms that contribute to vaginal dysbiosis syndromes, and as part of routine care to monitor a women’s vaginal microbiome.

Inherited Cancer Genetics (ICGx)

  • Next generation sequencing technology is used to screen for pathogenic genetic variants which may predispose individuals to a higher risk of developing certain kinds of cancer.
  • Used when a strong family history of cancer is indicated, as part of preventative screening.

Carrier Testing

  • Modern laboratory technology is used to screen for genetic variants which may predispose patients to a higher risk of developing certain kinds of genetic illnesses.
  • Recommended when a patient belongs to a certain predisposed ethnic group as part of preventative screening.
